The 20p test: check your tread in ten seconds

09 Mar · Tyres · 4 min read

Tyre being changed with professional equipment

One coin, four grooves, zero excuses — plus when alignment, not new rubber, is the fix.

How the coin test works

Push a 20p coin into the main grooves. If the outer band stays hidden, you have legal tread. If you can see it clearly, book a free tread check — and check all four tyres, not just one.

Read the wear pattern

Worn in the middle means over-inflation. Worn on both edges means under-inflation. Worn on one edge only usually means alignment — new tyres without alignment just wears the new ones the same way.

Don't forget pressures

Check them cold, monthly, against the sticker in your door shut — not the number on the tyre wall. Correct pressures save fuel and double tyre life.
